How this works

1

Federal floor: 5 years

The CARD Act (2009) prohibits gift cards from expiring for at least 5 years from purchase or last reload. Citation: 15 U.S.C. ยง 1693lโ€“1. Effective August 22, 2010.

2

State rules may add more

Some states like California, Maine, and Montana extend or eliminate expiration entirely for certain gift cards. Others require retailers to transfer dormant balances to the state's unclaimed-property fund after a set period.

3

Unclaimed property is reclaimable

If a retailer transferred your balance to your state, it's waiting for you. Search and claim it for free through your state's official unclaimed-property portal โ€” no fee, no middleman.
